About The Danish Church
The Danish Church has been serving the spiritual needs of seafarers and the wider community in Hull for more than 150 years.
The first Danish Church in Hull was consecrated in 1871 and was the first Danish Seamen’s Church to be established in a foreign port. It stood for 70 years until it was flattened in an air raid in 1941.
The current building opened nearby in 1954. It was consecrated on May 9th by the Bishop of Copenhagen, H Fuglsang-Domgaard in the presence of Prince Georg of Denmark.
The current church is home to some items which were rescued from the rubble of the original property but it has a modern appearance and outlook as a result of significant improvements over the years.
In 1974, thanks to a generous legacy, it was possible to build semi-detached dwellings to serve as homes for the pastor and their assistant. These are currently rented out to private occupants and bring in much-needed revenue.
During 1994-95 the generosity of the International Transport Federation made it possible to have the church modernised with an extension and new facilities.
The Danish and Scandinavian community has not increased in recent years and the number of visits by seafarers has declined but the church still holds religious services and is available for hire as a unique venue for weddings and other ceremonies.
It is also gaining recognition among the wider community for the quality and convenience of its location and facilities. The Scandinavian Market, which dates back to the 1960s and is our biggest fundraiser, attracts huge numbers of people including the local community and visitors old and new from across the country.
